Statement of significance

The Cookbook Collection comprises 29 cookbooks that were displayed in the Feeding the Nation module of the Nation Gallery at the National Museum of Australia from 2001 - 2009. Most of the books are in good condition, although they show signs of use. The cookbooks range in type from recipe encyclopaedias to books with recipes using a particular product or ingredient (eg. gelatine) to school textbooks. Three of the pillars of Australian cooking are represented: Country Women's Association, Margaret Fulton and the Women's Weekly.

Cookery books both represent and help us understand the evolving eating and cooking habits of Australians since the late nineteenth century. They bring into focus our ideas about diet, taste and nutrition, and concepts of food aesthetics, cultural heritage, gender roles, consumption, household economy and national identity.
