Statement of significance

This collection consists of two programmes produced for the 1954 Royal Tour of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh. The first programme was for the official welcome to the Royal Couple by seventy thousand ex-servicemen and women at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The second programme was produced for the dedication of the Shrine of Remembrance Forecourt by Queen Elizabeth II for those Victorians who served in the 1939 - 1945 War.

This collection compliments the National Museum of Australia's existing collection of Royal memorabilia. The Johnson, Connors and Mabbott Collections relate specifically to the 1954 Royal Tour of Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh. The Charles Leski Auctions, Lot 2057 Collection includes examples of programmes from the 1954 Royal Tour. The Ballard Collection makes up the largest of the collections with over 190 items of Royal memorabilia. The addition of the programmes to the National Historical Collection addresses the core themes of Governing, Creating Culture and Celebrating Life, as identified in the current Collections Framework 2002 - 2007.
