Thread gauge

Object information

Physical description

A metric, 'systeme international' thread gauge, featuring multiple fold-out 'combs' of various sizes, sandwiched between two oblong metal plates. The marker's mark; "THE L.S. STARRETT CO, / ATHOL MASS. U.S.A. / NO 158 / SYSTEME INTERNATIONAL" is stamped, and the names; "R.Stanley / Adelaide" and "A.G.ROSS" are engraved on the sides. There is a pin missing from the right side of the gauge, which allows the keys to fall out from between the two plates.

Statement of significance

This timber and canvas toolbox and associated tools belonged to Alfred Ross who worked with the Government Ordnance Factory in Maribyrong from 1933 until his death in 1979. The Maribyrnong Defence Explosives factory complex which includes the Ordnance Factory has been placed on the Register of the National Estate.

The Neil, Lynette and Barry Ross collection makes an important contribution to the documentation of industrial Australia, particularly to the role of a federal government agency in the industrial development of Australia during wartime and peacetime.
