Object information

Physical description

Rectangular wooden post box painted red with a sloped top. The front of the box is a hinged door with a hole at the centre left, and a wide package posting slot with "NEWSPAPERS & PACKETS" and "POST OFFICE" painted in white with black shadowing. Clearance times are painted in grey. "POST OFFICE - POST NEWSPAPER & PACKETS HERE" is painted on the left side, and "POST OFFICE" is painted on the right.

Statement of significance

This collection consists of 87 items from the New South Wales historical section of Australia Post. The items range from furnishings that were used for the opening of the Sydney GPO in 1874 to telephones, signs, posters, and postal boxes. The material covers a period of over one hundred years of postal service in Australia.
