Red metal pillar box with arched top

Object information

Physical description

Rectangular red painted metal pillar box, with an arched top and decorative barley twist edges. The letter slot is at the top of the front panel. Its hinged flap is embossed with "POST HERE". Below the slot is a door with "W Taylor Paragon Foundry Pyrmont" embossed at the bottom, above a scalloped handle. Clearance times are painted on the right side in grey and black. "Historical Section" is written in black marker pen on the top of the box.

Statement of significance

This collection consists of 87 items from the New South Wales historical section of Australia Post. The items range from furnishings that were used for the opening of the Sydney GPO in 1874 to telephones, signs, posters, and postal boxes. The material covers a period of over one hundred years of postal service in Australia.
