Object information

Physical description

A rectangular red painted metal pillar box with an arched top. A raised crest depicting an emu and a kangaroo holding a shield appears on three sides, and the top. Two sides are embossed with 'NSW MAIL' and one also has a hinged flap with 'POST HERE' above an outward opening door with a hinged clasp. Another side is embossed with 'LETTER BOX' and the trademark 'TRIGG MARR & TAYLOR / SYDNEY'. The opposite side has four holes.

Statement of significance

This collection consists of 87 items from the New South Wales historical section of Australia Post. The items range from furnishings that were used for the opening of the Sydney GPO in 1874 to telephones, signs, posters, and postal boxes. The material covers a period of over one hundred years of postal service in Australia.
