Object information

Physical description

Rectangular red painted, metal pillar box with an arched top. It features a locked door on one side with a letter slot and flap marked "Post Here" in white lettering with black shadow detail. The opposite side is painted with instructions for posting articles of value. One side has "Letter box hours of clearance" in white and black. The fourth side has four holes.

Statement of significance

This collection consists of 87 items from the New South Wales historical section of Australia Post. The items range from furnishings that were used for the opening of the Sydney GPO in 1874 to telephones, signs, posters, and postal boxes. The material covers a period of over one hundred years of postal service in Australia.
