Victorian Postal Service square red metal letter box

Physical description

Victorian Postal Service square red painted metal letter box, in two sections, with a flat top. The lower section has square decorative borders on three sides, and the fourth side has a hinged door with a handle and keyhole. The top section has a decorative border on four sides. "VR" [Victoria Regina] is painted in gold and black above a letter slot with a hinged flap.

Statement of significance

This collection consists of 87 items from the New South Wales historical section of Australia Post. The items range from furnishings that were used for the opening of the Sydney GPO in 1874 to telephones, signs, posters, and postal boxes. The material covers a period of over one hundred years of postal service in Australia.
