Object information

Physical description

A wedding invitation on cream coloured card with silver edging and script printing. The folded card features a silver bell design in the top left hand corner of the front cover. Below this design in the centre area of the card are the names "Elizabeth" and "Howard", and in the bottom left hand corner of the cover is the date of the wedding "August 16th / 1958". The inside of the card features information relating to the event in silver script. The invitation is from a "Mr. & Mrs. A.B. Duffield" inviting "Mr. + Mrs. J.L. Burton" to the Melbourne wedding and following reception of their daughter "Elizabeth / to / Howard F. Dossor". "Mr. and Mrs. J.L. Burton" has been hand-written in blue ink in the space provided. The invitation appears to be in a stable condition although there are markings on the front of the card, possibly green ink. The invitation was found in a photograph case [1996.26.147.1], hidden behind one of the photographs.

Statement of significance

The collection consists of documents, photographs, scrapbooks, clothing and other memorabilia from the careers and personal lives of Emma (Emilie) Roach, a well-known and successful equestrian, and her husband John (Jack) Burton, who made several record-breaking drives in motor vehicles across Australia during the 1910s and 1920s.

Born in Narrandera, New South Wales, in 1898, Roach began equestrian competition at the age of 10, and continued through most levels and types of competition, remaining an unpaid amatuer, until her retirement in 1955. Her main competitions and successes were in the show-ring. After Burton and Roach married in 1925, they lived in Sydney for many years and travelled from there to agricultural shows in New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland where Roach would compete and Burton worked in motor vehicle sales and writing articles for motoring magazines.
