Where our stories come alive
A wooden presentation shield featuring silver metal embellishments and plaques. The plaques and embellishments include a laurel wreath, and a double scroll with engraved text "EQUESTRIENNE" and "CONTESTS". Beneath this scroll is a convex plaque, larger in size than the others that surround it. The plaque is shield shaped with fine patterning around its circumference and engraved text that reads "ON THE FLAT AND OVER FENCES. / WON BY / MISS EMILIE ROACH, / OF / NARRANDERA, / N.S.W.". Beneath this plaque is a scroll with engraved text "R.A.S. SHOW" on the left diagonal, and "SYDNEY N.S.W." on the right diagonal. Beneath this final scroll is a small convex shield shaped plaque of the same size and design as the other six plaques that run either side of the central features of the shield. There are seven small shields in total, three running down each side of the shield and one at the bottom, all feature engraved block text from left to right down "WALKER & HALL / CONTEST, / 1923.", "W.T.WATERS / CONTEST, / 1922.", "WALKER & HALL / CONTEST, / 1924.", "W.T.WATERS / CONTEST, / 1923.", "WALKER & HALL / CONTEST, / 1925.", "W.T.WATERS / CONTEST, / 1924.", "JENKIN SHOE / CONTEST, / 1925.". The shield is generally in good condition although is does exhibit some scratches and dents to the wooden surface and the metal additions are tarnished.
The collection consists of documents, photographs, scrapbooks, clothing and other memorabilia from the careers and personal lives of Emma (Emilie) Roach, a well-known and successful equestrian, and her husband John (Jack) Burton, who made several record-breaking drives in motor vehicles across Australia during the 1910s and 1920s.
Born in Narrandera, New South Wales, in 1898, Roach began equestrian competition at the age of 10, and continued through most levels and types of competition, remaining an unpaid amatuer, until her retirement in 1955. Her main competitions and successes were in the show-ring. After Burton and Roach married in 1925, they lived in Sydney for many years and travelled from there to agricultural shows in New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland where Roach would compete and Burton worked in motor vehicle sales and writing articles for motoring magazines.
