The Relatives by Bevan Hayward [Pooaraar]

The Relatives by Bevan Hayward [Pooaraar]

Object information

Aboriginal artist Pooaraar (Bevan Hayward), completed a series of unframed pen and wash drawings, of which this is one, for a friend, Geoff Page, a non-Aboriginal poet. The drawings were potential illustrations for a proposed volume of poetry entitled 'The Great Forgetting'. The volume was published jointly by Aboriginal Studies Press and the National Museum of Australia in 1996.

Physical description

A black, grey and white pen and wash drawing on white watercolour paper. There is a border left around the drawing. The drawing numbered '2' in the top right corner. The drawing is of a party of white men landing on shore from a small boat with a tall ship in the distance. On the land and in the foreground of the drawing, two Aboriginal men holding a spear in their hands are each depicted standing on an elevated rock platform looking out towards the spectacle of the new arrivals.
