Physical description

A wooden parrying shield in one piece with a bowed anterior and a diamond shaped cross section, with a bulge at the handle which is carved in solid. The ends of the shield taper to a rounded point and anterior facets are incised with groups of parallel chevrons. Adze marks visible under surface smoothing

  • Mr T P Hackney purchased this object as part of a collection of Aboriginal artefacts from an auctioneer in Gilgandra, New South Wales, in 1918, and it was passed down through his family until it was acquired by the National Museum of Australia in 1983
