Boxed microscope and fittings (H Powell circa 1830 - 35) ? Attributed to Allan Cunningham

Physical description

A microscope with fitted components made of glass, steel and brass, stored in a wooden box. The components seem to be complete in comparison to the box fit-out. The wooden box is rectangular with a hinged wooden door opening at the front and a brass handle attached to the top. Attached to the inside of the door are two labels, one of which has printed text the other is handwritten. The top printed label partially reads 'Mathematical Optical and Philosophical / Instrument Maker. / ... /'. [The back of the box has become detached from the actual box].

Statement of significance

The Phillip Parker King and Allan Cunningham collection consists of seven objects overall. Attributed to Phillip Parker King are his naval dress regalia (a pair of epaulettes, sword, leather belt and cockade hat), and a theodolite. Objects attributed to Allan Cunningham are a boxed pocket microscope and larger boxed microscope with slides, nameplate and fittings. The objects are in fair condition.

The Phillip Parker King and Allan Cunningham collection is significant as the objects relate to the lives and careers of two men important to the development of colonial Australia. Phillip Parker King was renowned for his contributions to hydrography, completing Matthew Flinders' maps of the Australian coastline and being the first native born Australian to receive promotion to the rank of Rear Admiral of the Blue in the British Royal Navy. He was also involved in the agricultural industry of New South Wales and spent time surveying and scientifically documenting the region. Allan Cunningham is known for his work in Australian botany, his extensive contribution to the Australian collections at Kew Royal Gardens formally recognised by the Linnean Society in 1832. He is also known for his pioneering inland exploration of areas of both New South Wales and Queensland, leading to the discovery of rich agricultural land including the Darling Downs.
