A framed ochre coloured print comprised of a black, blue, red and yellow four plate etching, on Velin Arches 300 gsm paper. The print features various objects that include armbands and two views of a woven hair string pituri bag. In the background is a drawing plan with 'BRITISH MUSEUM' inscribed across the top left side and 'No. 2' inscribed in the top right corner. Further text at the bottom reads 'Drawing No. 2 referred to the Contract / dated 3rd May 1881', signed and dated 3rd May 1881'. The artwork is numbered, signed and dated '2/30 the holes in the land 1 Judy WATSON 2015' across the bottom outer edge of the print.
The collection comprises six framed prints by contemporary Indigenous artist Judy Watson, titled 'the holes in the land' 1-6. The prints were made in 2015 for the linked exhibition by the National Museum of Australia and the British Museum, based on the Indigenous collections of the British Museum.
In 2013 Judy Watson was an artistic fellow at the British Museum as part of a collaborative research project between the British Museum, the National Museum of Australia and the Australian National University. For the project Watson researched Aboriginal cultural material held in the Museum's collections since the 19th and early 20th century. She produced a suite of six etchings, 'the holes in the land'. In four of the etchings the artist has superimposed some of her drawings of Aboriginal objects for the British Museum's collection over 18th and 19th century architectural plans of the British Museum. The last two etchings show plans of the Museum.
