Statement of significance

This collection comprises clothing, ephemera and medals associated with Latvian-born Australian swimmer John Konrads (1942-). With the exception of the replica Olympic medals which were given to John by the International Olympic Committee in 1999, he acquired the majority of this material when participating in the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne and the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome. All objects are in a good state of conservation.

This collection addresses a number of themes important to Australian social history. In demonstrating the success of John and Ilsa Konrads (the 'Konrads kids'), it is also broadly representative of the achievements of non-British migrants to Australia in the decades immediately after the Second World War. It also lends insight into amateur swimming in the mid twentieth century, and offers research potential into Australia's enduring passion for sport and participation in the Olympic Games.
