Physical description

A portable black metal 'CORONA / -FOUR-' typewriter with cream-coloured keys, ribbon, round eraser disc attached with string and carry case with removable lid.

Statement of significance

The Elyne Mitchell Collection consists of a Corona typewriter and case. The typewriter was used by Mitchell for a number of decades from 1936 to around 1960.

Elyne Mitchell was the author of the Silver Brumby series of novels, a highly successful and influential group of books for children which are still in print fifty years after their first appearance and which were published in over forty countries. Mitchell also wrote non-fiction, particularly on the theme of Australians' relationship with the environment in the Snowy Mountains region. She was honoured for her contribution to Australian literature by the award of the Medal of the Order of Australia in 1988, and Charles Sturt University awarded her an Honorary Doctorate of Letters in 1993. Mitchell also won Children's Book Council awards.
