A poster featuring a colour photograph of a person surfing with text below that reads 'OCT. / 22nd / BILLABONG / KOORI / OCT. / 23rd. / INVITATIONAL 1994'. The poster bears four signatures, over the colour photograph, of Brendan Margieson, Mark Occhilupo and Dylan Longbottom and Robert Ryan.
The Robert Ryan Billabong Poster collection consists of a poster promoting the 1994 Billabong Koori Invitational surfing competition. The poster bears the signatures of Billabong-sponsored surf riders who participated in the event - Brendan Margieson, Mark Occhilupo and Dylan Longbottom - as well as Robert Ryan, a sponsor of the event and donor of the object.
Following the inaugural 1993 event, the 1994 Billabong Koori Invitational event was the first surfing competition for Aboriginal surfers supported by a major sponsor. This poster is therefore associated with an important moment from the beginnnings of Indigenous involvement in the burgeoning surfing movement, and reflects a wider pattern of Indigenous involvement in contemporary Australian sport. As a product of the relationship which developed between Ryan and the Wreck Bay Aboriginal community, the poster also represents the broader themes of cross-cultural cooperation and reconciliation.
