Sterling silver cigar case presented to Sir Robert Menzies by the Heads of Diplomatic Missions in Australia 1966

Physical description

Cigar or cigarette case made from sterling silver and a presentation box for the case. The case is made from sterling silver and hallmarked London 1965. It is rectangular with a slightly domed lid and is cedar lined with three compartments. Engraved text reads "The Right Honourable Sir Robert Menzies...by Heads of Diplomatic Missions in Australia 1966" and the engraved signatures of the Heads of Missions appear on the top and three sides. The presentation box has a blue cover and a hinged lid with two clasps on either side. The case is lined with blue velvet and white satin, and text on the satin lining reads "By appointment to H.M. Elizabeth II, Silversmith, Hardy Bros. Australia".

Statement of significance

The RG Menzies Collection provides a material record of the success of the career of RG Menzies. The collection includes a range of medals and civil awards received by Sir Robert such as his Jubilee and Coronation medals, Order of Australia, Companion of Honour and US Legion of Merit. There are also a number of special presentation items including a walking stick, cigar boxes, silver gravy boats from the Kooyong electorate and a silver inkstand presented by Queen Elizabeth II. The collection taken as a whole reflects Menzies' public standing as Australia's longest serving prime minister.
