Physical description

Silver cigar box and cigar box case. The cigar box has an inscription on the lid that reads "The Right Honourable Sir Robert Gordon Menzies, K.T., C.H., Q.C. Prime Minister of Australia 1939-1941; 1949-1966 From the Citizens of Melbourne in appreciation of his leadership, dedicated service, and unfailing devotion to the Commonwealth of Australia. Citizens Dinner - Melbourne 2nd June 1966". The box is cedar lined and divided into two compartments. The box has a black leather base. The cigar box case has a blue velvet lined lid and white stain lining. The case has two metal clasps, and the label inside the case reads "By appointment to H.M. the King. Thai Nakon. Silverware & Nielloware. Bangkok. Thailand".

Statement of significance

The RG Menzies Collection provides a material record of the success of the career of RG Menzies. The collection includes a range of medals and civil awards received by Sir Robert such as his Jubilee and Coronation medals, Order of Australia, Companion of Honour and US Legion of Merit. There are also a number of special presentation items including a walking stick, cigar boxes, silver gravy boats from the Kooyong electorate and a silver inkstand presented by Queen Elizabeth II. The collection taken as a whole reflects Menzies' public standing as Australia's longest serving prime minister.
