Statement of significance

This collection of objects provides an insight into both the public and private lives of Dame Pattie Menzies. The collection consists of objects which belonged to the late Dame Pattie. Features of this collection include a sewing machine, a hand made pillowcase, nine hats, seven pairs of gloves, an evening gown, her official medals including her Dame Grand Cross of the British Empire (GBE), a suit, fur coat and stole. The costume items, particularly the hats and gloves and official medals, convey a sense of Dame Pattie's public standing as the Prime Minister's wife and give a sense of the propriety and elegance that Dame Pattie Menzies possessed. Though her taste was not extravagant, Dame Pattie Menzies dressed to provide a model for Australian women. The Singer Sewing Machine and the homemade pillowcase are evidence of a frugal domestic life.
