Salter's Spring Balance No.20, used for weighing large mail bags

Object information

Physical description

Metal spring-type scale set, the reverse of which is painted black. The dial has measures engraved around the edge and "Salter's Spring Balance / No.20 / Made in England / to weigh 100 lb." is engraved in the centre. At the top is a fixed loop with a metal ring, at the base is a loop connected to the indicating arrow, also with a metal ring attached. "INST.4.31.1" is written on a yellow "post-it" note which was attached to the front.

Statement of significance

This collection consists of 87 items from the New South Wales historical section of Australia Post. The items range from furnishings that were used for the opening of the Sydney GPO in 1874 to telephones, signs, posters, and postal boxes. The material covers a period of over one hundred years of postal service in Australia.
