Black plastic wall telephone

Object information

Physical description

Black plastic wall telephone with a broken base and cracked top. Printing on the white disc on the front of the telephone reads "To call: - turn handle & lift handset / when finished replace handset and turn handle". The handle is mounted in the centre of the disc and above this a black label reads "Security". The handset is black plastic and there are red and white wires protruding from the back of the telephone.

Statement of significance

This collection consists of 87 items from the New South Wales historical section of Australia Post. The items range from furnishings that were used for the opening of the Sydney GPO in 1874 to telephones, signs, posters, and postal boxes. The material covers a period of over one hundred years of postal service in Australia.
