Black metal desk telephone with a winding handle

Object information

Physical description

The telephone is a Magneto Handset Telephone FTR-804A (P.M.G. Serial 1, Item 138) and is fitted with a replacement standard No. 184 handset. The telephone has a black metal case with a bakelite handset and a winding handle on the right side. Paper under a plastic disk in place of a dial reads "Mr.A.Vaisey. Glenorie 125". Above this is "...Telephone and Radio Corporation / Made in U.S.A." embossed. The handset has "184" on the inner centre of the handle, and a cupped mouthpiece.

Statement of significance

This collection consists of 87 items from the New South Wales historical section of Australia Post. The items range from furnishings that were used for the opening of the Sydney GPO in 1874 to telephones, signs, posters, and postal boxes. The material covers a period of over one hundred years of postal service in Australia.
