Jockey's spur

Physical description

Jockey's metal 'wishbone' shaped spur. It has integral studs on the end of both arms, and one has a buckle attached to it. Almost all of the chrome-plating is missing and the exposed surfaces are rusty.

Statement of significance

This collection consists of material relating to Maurice McCarten's illustrious career as a jockey and trainer of some of Australia's best racehorses during the 1930s and 1940s.

Horse racing in Australia has had a very long history involving race meetings in major cities and regional centres. Today top Australian races attract international interest and participation. During his career Maurice McCarten won many important Australian races that have maintained their prestige to the present day. Contemporary jockey's and trainers continue to have their successes compared to those of McCarten's, his impressive racing record remains in the top ranks of racing statistics.
