National Museum of Australia

Where our stories come alive

Collection Explorer

Welcome to Collection Explorer

This site allows visitors to browse and discover the National Museum of Australia’s online collection. About 40 per cent of the Museum’s collection is available online. New object records and sets are added regularly and existing information is being enhanced.

The Museum’s collection relates to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history and culture, Australia’s history and society since 1788 and the interaction of people with the environment.

If you have more information about the collection or believe there is an error, please complete our online feedback form, noting the object number or URL.

This site contains names and images of deceased Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Some older records contain images and terms that are now considered inappropriate and do not reflect the views of the National Museum.

Images and information are for general use. See the Museum’s Copyright notice and website Conditions of use.

The Museum does not own copyright for all Collection Explorer material. Unless otherwise indicated you may copy, distribute, display, download or print for personal use, non-commercial educational purposes or non-commercial use in your organisation, provided you attribute the National Museum of Australia.

If you are the copyright holder of any material on this website and would like the image removed, please email collectionsearch [at]

Image requests

Use the ‘request image’ button on each record for permission to use an image, to seek a higher resolution image or to request new photography. Use this button to make an image enquiry if you are unsure who owns copyright.
